In 1916, Sacred Heart Church became the first
Roman Catholic community in Edinburg, Texas. In the 1920s, as the
agricultural potential of the Valley developed,
more
and more people from many parts of the country and Mexico
settled
in the Rio Grande Valley. Because of this growth, the mission
church of Sacred Heart became a parish in 1927. The present church
was built in 1947. As the population continued to increase, Sacred
Heart Church, once itself a Mission Church, became the mother church
of St. Joseph’s and Holy Family. Currently, Sacred Heart Parish
serves the city of Edinburg, north of University Avenue (Rt. 107)
and the surrounding areas which includes the church of San Jose,
Lull.
Adapting to the needs of the times, Sacred
Heart Parish has seen many changes and looks forward with confidence
to the future. Being part of Sacred Heart Parish is a high priority
in the lives of our parishioners. Reaching out in service and love,
many people are active in various parish ministries.
Our parish is dedicated to the love of God of
which the Sacred Heart is a symbol
and reminder. “God so loved the world that he sent his only
begotten Son” Jn.3:16
