Rectory: Warren Delano House 1835
From 1905 to 1992, the parish used the Sacred Hearts Monastery and then the
Novitiate, both on Adams Street, as the rectory. In 1992, the parish was advised
that the Sacred Hearts Congregation needed to reacquire both the Adams Street
properties to accommodate retiring priests and brothers. Having decided not to
build a rectory, the parish began a search for a house large enough to
accommodate parish offices and housing for 3 priests. That same year, a portion
of the Delano House became available. In 1835, Warren Delano built a large
mansion on Walnut Street near the Town Hall. Subsequently, the house was
subdivided into three dwellings in the late 1940's.
The Rectory, at 41-43 Walnut, is the center section of the divided house. When
separating the center section, only the second, third, and attic floors were
relocated to the corner of Walnut and Washington Streets. The Rectory has a
double address since it was sub-divided into a duplex by a former owner.
Warren Delano is the maternal grandfather of President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt. FDR summered in this house as a young man and visited while
president. Below are photos documenting some of those visits.
