Removing the pews, July 14, 2003

Fifty volunteers from St. Joseph Parish, Fairhaven, arrived at 7 PM Monday night, July 14, to remove 100 pews from the church wood floor in preparation for refinishing the following day. The removal and refinishing are part of a project to re-space the pews for more comfortable use, replace kneelers worn by 79 years of use, repositioning the choir to take better advantage of the church acoustical design, and create a user-friendly handicap seating section closer to the church elevator. Refinishing began Tuesday morning and next Monday night the same volunteer crew will return to space and bolt the pews into the new position. While work is being done, the church is closed to the public until July 28 and parishioners are gathering for daily and weekend Mass in the St. Joseph School gymnasium.
