| St. Damien Canonization Memories |

Father Damien de Veuster,
the Sacred Hearts priest who cared for Hansen's disease patients in
Kalaupapa on Moloka'i and died of the disease in 1889, was canonized on
Oct. 11 in Rome. The photos above reflect memories of the historic event
and were taken by Fr. William F. Petrie, ss.cc.,
Provincial of the Congregation of the Sacred hearts of Jesus & Mary in
Fairhaven. Photos clockwise from top, left: The

11, 2009. Pope Benedict XVl offers the prayer
which proclaims Damien a saint in the Catholic Church. Fr. Chris
Keahi, the Provincial of Hawaii concelebrated the Mass with
Pope Benedict XVl along with cardinals and bishops from around the
world. Thousands of people from all over the world
crowd St. Peter's Square in Rome, and Fr. Stan Kolasa, ss.cc.,
dressed as St. Damien, concelebrated a Mass during a canonization
celebration at the Wareham Retreat Center in Wareham, MA.
